Mangosteen-Queen of Fruits

Mangosteen ''Garcinia Mangostana''

The mangosteen, also called purple mangosteen, belongs to a tropical tree that is native to Indonesia. The flesh inside mangosteen is juicy, sweet, tangy and fibrous like peach. Mangosteen is acquired the majority of times by the juice as the fruit does not have a large shelf life after being removed from the tree. Frozen or dehydrated are the forms in which mangosteen appear. If mangosteen juice products include the inedible purple exocarp then an additional phytochemical value is provided by the polyphenols such as xanthonoids and tannins that offer health benefits.

Throughout the recent years, scientists have significantly examined the potential benefits that the superfood Mangosteen can potentially offer. Antioxidant content significantly confers benefits in the human body by preventing occurence of chronic diseases. Additionally, antioxidants are efficient in eliminating the consequences that arise due to free radical damage that can lead to aging, degenerative disease, and cancer. Xanthones that are found as antioxidants in the mangosteen exert a more powerful effect compared to Vitamin C and E. Heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension and thrombosis are some medical conditions that can be treated due to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrmobotic and vasorelaxant activities of the xanthones.

Mangosteen also has antibacterial properties by inhibiting tuberculosis and staphylococcus aureus, an antibiotic resistant ''superbug'' which causes pneumonia, bone, skin and bloodstream infections.

Food considered beneficial however harmful effects possible

Generic multi vitamins: ''Check nutritional information''

Some products can be considered nutritious and healthy however they may contain chemicals, byproducts, genetically modified organisms and other cancer ingredients. Thus information about exact nutrition content of each product is required.

1) Generic multi vitamins: Generic vitamins such as One-a-Day, Centrum and Equate are considered by the majority of people as effective solution to acquire the vitamin requirements for every day. However all these are synthetic, dead, cooked in laboratories and contain ingredients that are toxic to the body. That's why some of the vitamins can have side effects when administrated.

2) Soy, soy protein, tofu and soy milk: The majority of soy, around 90% is genetically modified so deadly pesticides may be contained within soy products. Cancer and infertility are possible consequences when there is exposure to soy that is genetically modified.

3) Agave: Many nutritionists recommend Agave as good substitute of high fructose corn syrup. However it contains about 55% fructose on average and it is usually laboratory manufactured thus nutrient value is lacked.

5) Canola Oil: This type of oil is not originated from a canola plant. Thus it is not a virgin olive oil, neither a vegetable oil but a rapeseed oil. This type of oil infects mitochondria thus these become unable to get oxygen which leads to cancer.

6) Organic Milk: Raw milk is the milk that is recommended instead of the organic one as the homogenized milk causes inflammation and disease in the body.

7) Low sodium or ''healthy choice'' soups: As far as canned foods are concerned they are full of toxins and metals. This leads to Alzheimer's disease. Low sodium soup can be seemed as beneficial but possible composition in chemicals such as sodium benzoate causes harm in humans.

8) ''Light'' and ''sugar free'' salad dressings: These type of dressings contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose and sorbitol. Thus cancer cells can multiply. Fat is taken out but sugar is added in so these dressings are not ''light''.

Grape seed extract provides a natural treatment for colorectal cancer.

Grape Seed Extract

Colorectal cancer is a serious medical condition which affects significant number of people. It is characterized for uncontrolled cell growth in the colon or rectum. This type of cancer is expressed with rectal bleeding and anemia which are associated with weight loss and changes in bowel habits. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States, with more than 100,000 new diagnoses and 52,000 deaths attributed to the disease every year. Natural compounds such as resveratrol and curcumin are efficient towards the prevention of colon cancer. Additionally, the grape seed extract targets damaged cells constitutes an effective treatment for colorectal cancer.

Scientists have carried out an extensive research concerning the effect of the grape seed extract in various stages of the colon cancer. In more advanced stages of the colon cancer the seed extract originated from the grapes can provide an efficient treatment. According to a researcher Mr Derry less than half of the concentration of the seed extract can suppress cell growth and kill 50% of stage IV cells. Except from their high efficiency the many bioactive compounds are able to target multiple mutations that may be caused by the cancer.

Sunlight's feel-good effects

In northern hemisphere during the winter months there is a depression that affects many people while these people feel much better during spring and summer. This is the disorder known as the seasonal affective disorder. The group of people that is affected mainly is the people who live in areas where winter days are very short or when there are big changes in the amount of daylight in different seasons. Sunlight exposure is associated with mood trends and emotional well being.

Sunlight has been considered for years as an important factor that determines the various fluctuations in the mood. There is a mechanism by which sunlight exerts this influence. Once sunlight hits the retina a signal is sent to the nervous system which regulates the production of critical mood transmitters, melatonin and serotonin. If the amount of sunlight that is accepted is minimum then the production of these neurotransmitters is decreased. Except from its beneficial role in mood regulation sunlight is recognized for its contribution to the treatment of anorexia nervosa and epilepsy.

An intense warming sensation can be caused by exposure to sunlight. Sun generates radiant or infrared heat. This type of heat has a direct effect in the body tissues as it penetrates them thus causes a sensational warming sensation. Detoxification and rejuvenation of tissues can be enhanced through the increased circulation.

Low salt diets don't work and hurt your body

Consumption of salt over the years is associated many times with health. However there was a belief among everyone over the years that low salt or no salt diets could be the best ways to avoid hypertension and heart disease. Findings of studies provided a useful outcome as it was found that low salt or no salt in the diet can lead to higher mortality rates among people with cardiovascular disease.

Type of salt is the main factor that plays a crucial role rather than the amount of salt. More specifically table salt which is normally found in the homes, restaurants and in processed foods is characterised for its lack of nutritional value, essential minerals and nutrients. This type of salt undergoes a series of processes such as heat for drying, addition of anti clumping and moisture inhibiting chemicals. Contrary, wholesome salt is a type of salt that undergoes minimal processing and one that has been developed far from industrial contaminants.

Salt is an essential component of human nutrition as there are many health benefits such as control of water levels, aid in heart health, promotion of healthy blood sugar, reduction of muscle cramp, improved lipido and reduced aging.

Shocking: Nearly nine million Americans now take pharmaceutical drugs just to sleep at night.

According to data supported by the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention roughly 9 million Americans rely on pharmaceutical sleeping drugs such as Ambien and Lunesta to enhance their sleeping trends. The survey carried out investigated 17000 individuals aged 20 years and older. Patterns of sleeping pill use were evaluated between the years 2005 and 2010. The survey involved various demographic distinctions such as race, sex and educational level.

It was discovered that around 8.6 million people have used recently a prescription sleep aid within the past month. Moreover, significant amount of adults admitted various clinical conditions such as sleep disorders and troubles. The demographic group with the highest reported use were the female adults and more particularly, older, non hispanic and white. Throughout recent years the use of sleeping pills has been on the rise significantly as younger people become also addicts of sleeping pills.

A natural approach is recommended compared to sleeping pills as they can have serious effects. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal people who take prescription sleeping pills regularly are five times more likely to die within 2.5 years compared to people who do not take drugs. Exercise is the best recommendation as significant amount of exercise can enhance and improve the sleeping trends.

Antibacterial soap pollutes rivers, adds to bacterial resistance.

Nowadays, in urban water and regional streams there are highly resistant strains of bacteria. These bacteria render the new antibiotics practically useless. According to various environmental studies from Chicago metro-area there are disturbing levels of powerful bacteria strains that are derived from specific urban areas. An example of a powerful bacterium is triclosan.

Triclosan is a synthetic antibacterial chemical often added to personal body care products. Its applications vary from commercial toothpastes, mouthwashes, soaps to deodorants. Products like Dial liquid soap, Clearasil Daily Face Wash, Colgate Total Toothpaste and Old Spice Deodorant contain the synthetic triclosan. Water treatment facilities can effectively remove triclosan but in some cities triclosan can be spread into the environments causing pollution in the nearby rivers, streams and groundwater.

An experiment in Chicago's urban sources involved the monitoring of triclosan levels in 3 sites. Findings suggested that urbanisation is directly proportional with higher triclosan levels. Urban areas often rely on sewage systems that can back up during high rain fall. Chemicals like triclosan are high in urban sewage and industrial waste water so chemical overflow significantly in the surrounding environment.

5 Foods and Drinks to avoid before bed.

Sleep plays a crucial role in the performance of everyone. According to various studies it is found that sleep has a significant effect in immune function, metabolism, memory, learning and other vital functions. Inadequate sleep patterns lead to chronic health problems such as heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity and depression.

Some foods and drinks are recommended to be avoided as they lead to sleepless nights.

  1. Chocolate and other caffeine filled foods and drinks

Cappuccino that is drank on the afternoon or a candy can have a significant impact in the sleep trends as the body needs to get rid of the caffeine up to 5 hours.

  2. Spicy foods

Indian, Mexican and other spicy meals constitute examples of terrible late night meals. These type of meals enhance indigestion and reflux so sleep is disrupted significantly. The main concern associated with spicy foods is that heartburn occurs as a result sleep is impaired.

  3. Alcohol

Alcohol consumption can induce sleep disorders by disrupting the sequence and duration of sleep states. Alcohol consumption within an hour of bedtime disrupts the second half of the sleep period. People in this case tend to be awakened from dreams and to return to sleep with difficulty. Sleep disruption can lead to daytime fatigue and sleepiness. The elderly are at a higher risk as they achieve higher doses of alcohol in the blood and in their brain.

  4. Water

The optimum is to achieve hydration throughout the day as this regulates blood levels and improves performance. However moderation of hydration is recommended during later hours in order for the majority of fluid to be eliminated before bedtime. Excessive hydration can lead to hyperactivity in cases.

  5. Nothing

Starvation or excessive hunger leads to sleeplessness and increased activity. Being too much hungry or not hungry at all does not help and improve sleep trends.
