Peppermint eliminates digestion problems

Nowadays, peppermint experiences valuable application as an additive in a range of food products such as candies, ice creams, gums, cakes and toothpaste due to its characterising and refreshing paste and smell. Despite in its composition of sugar and chemicals, peppermint is recognized for its role in treating various digestive abdominal problems such as cramping, pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, stomach cancer, irritable bowel syndrome and gallbladder disease. Additionally it can provide a treatment for curb cravings and tension headaches.

There have been a considerable amount of studies that have been carried out in order to experiment the effectiveness of peppermint. More specifically a study took place in Italy at 2007 where 57 individuals suffered from irritable bowel syndrome. A delivery of peppermint oil would be tested in order to observe the effects. After four weeks in which the individuals acquired peppermint oil there was a reduction in abdominal bloating, pain or discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation, feeling of incomplete evacuation and passage of gas.

Another study that was carried out was in the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili in Iran. Twelve students were provided with mineral water containing 0.05 ml of peppermint oil for ten days and then observations were recorded. Improvements in respiratory efficiency and energy expenditure along with decrease in the blood pressure indicate that peppermint oil is useful due to antispasmodic, ant inflammatory, antioxidant and vascoconstricting effects.
